Who We Are

Founded in 1980, the Santa Clarita Runners is one of the premier fitness organizations in the Santa Clarita Valley. Our 200+ memberships include runners of all skill levels from beginning and returning runners, to local competitors, elite runners, and even world record holders.

The Santa Clarita Runners (SCRs) is a non-profit running organization that welcomes all people of any ability level to engage in fitness while developing lifetime friendships.

What we all share is a love for running. Whatever your distance, we have runners that enjoy it, from the pure speed of track sprints, to 5 and 10ks, half and full marathons, even ultras.

Our club offers 4 different weekly workouts, including our marathon training, track workout, 5-6 mile tempo/social fun run, and our up to 10 mile ‘LoweBucks’ run. Additionally we periodically have fun runs taking advantage of our numerous local trails, our favorite holidays and our love for unique challenges.

We also host and participate in several annual public events, including our Independence Day Classic, The Race for Amy and Be The Light. Lastly, we often compete in local events including the Santa Clarita Marathon, the LA Marathon, and the Great Race of Agoura, and the Heritage Valley 5K/10K.

Second only to our love for running is our love to spend time with others who love running. After our weekend morning workouts you’ll usually see a large group stay for coffee and after our evening workouts we often gather for dinner or just a beer. Two of our largest club events are our annual banquet and our summer social, both seem to get bigger and better each year.

Some of our favorite moments have come when we travel to an event together, whether it’s the nearly 200 mile Hood to Coast or Ragnar event, or when we travel as a team to other local or out of state events.

We also believe in giving back to our community. Our annual public events often benefit local charities. Our largest and oldest annual event, the Independence Day Classic, benefits the cross country teams of the local Santa Clarita Valley High Schools. Other events have benefited pediatric cancer organizations and the local food pantry. We also provide event and finish line support to local charity races and the City of Santa Clarita Marathon events.

We look forward to running with you soon.

What was your favorite Major to run?

I don’t really have a favorite major.

What is your favorite memory from chasing your Six Star?

The best part of every one of them was the trip with SCR friends and family to each of the race locations and exploring the surrounding city or country with them. Finding a race in another part of the country or world is a great excuse to travel with your friends. I highly recommend it!

What was your favorite Major to run?

The majors are all different and each has their draw. I think its the fun I had with my fellow runners/club members that make each marathon a great experience. Perhaps Boston (x9 times) because of all the memories made there throughout the years.

What is your favorite memory from chasing your Six Star?

Running NY 2024 which allowed me to finish off all the majors in one year.

October, 2022

Richard Rivadeneira

What was your favorite Major to run?

My favorite Major to run was the New York City marathon in 2019. I had no agenda but to enjoy the run through the 5 Burroughs and I did so well that I qualified for Boston after two disappointing years of chasing a BQ. There’s nothing sweeter than qualifying for a World Major Marathon while running a World Major Marathon.

What is your favorite memory from chasing your Six Star?

I have two favorite memories from chasing my Six Star. The first was the excitement from winning a lottery entry for the Tokyo Marathon, (which is unheard of because very few entries are allocated to US residents). I was very fortunate and though this was only my second star, it was then that I decided to pursue my commitment to obtain a 6 Star medal.

My second favorite memory was running for charity in my son’s name because of his disability and the money I raised for Autism, ultimately completing my 6th World Major and at 49, the youngest SCR to do so.

February, 2018

Paola Howard

What was your favorite Major to run?

Difficult to choose!  I ran New York, Chicago, and Berlin before I really started thinking the 6-star medal was a possibility (especially for a 100m/200m sprinter!)

If I have to pick, I will say London – the crowds are fantastic, the views and landmarks are wonderful to run by, I got the chance to raise funds for the hospice that had cared for our sister-in-law, and best of all family cheered me on along the course.

What is your favorite memory from chasing your Six Star?

In some ways, my journey towards the Six Star began in Berlin. I hadn’t run a marathon (New York) in 20 years and was really only running it to try to qualify for Boston. I didn’t, 63 seconds off, and was disappointed even though it was an 11-minute PR – a big lesson in goal setting! I did eventually BQ, and filled the ‘gap year’ between Berlin and Boston with Chicago, a city I love, so I was definitely unintentionally ticking off the Majors…

I thought London was my last marathon, so Tokyo came as a surprise. I had discounted it since at the time Abbott were not accepting other races run before 2006, so my New York ones didn’t count. Then they changed their mind… argh, had to get back out training!

Each race was surrounded by fun vacations with club friends and/or family, with new adventures, experiences, good food, and culture to remember them by.

Phil Howard

What was your favorite Major to run?

Favorite Major would be a toss up between London (ran 3x) and New York (ran 5x). Both have great crowd support and both courses show off the City sights to great effect with iconic finish lines.

What is your favorite memory from chasing your Six Star?

Favorite memory was probably running sub-3 in London on my 3rd attempt, I had such a great day out.

Nigel Toates

What was your favorite Major to run?

No favorite as each city and course have their own uniqueness, each one I have done with great friends on great vacations.

London will always be special as I run that for a Charity “Children with Leukemia”, my mum and dad have been very active in fundraising for. I lost a brother to Leukemia in the 70’s and my mum had tried to run it in the 80’s but didn’t get in. So to do it for them and on my 48th birthday makes it 1st.

What is your favorite memory from chasing your Six Star?

Has to be the SCR’s and all the time and effort that we all shared as we realized we were getting closer to make. The funniest one was Berlin, when there were only 5 races. A bunch of us went and completed the 5 stars and were celebrating in a Berlin bar, when Abbott announced Tokyo had been added as number 6, to say there was a little bit WTF said would be an understatement.

Chasing it, for me came down to Tokyo and realized that if I finished that race ahead of Phil and Paola Howard I would be the first SCR to complete all 6 Majors. It was a friendly, competitive thing, but we both wanted it, on the day I was the lucky one, I ran a strong 3hr 16mins, not bad at 58 and crossed the line ahead of all SCRS and became the first SCR to do all 6.

Now they have added Sydney Australia making it 7 races, I am the only one that has done Sydney so for me it is all 7 !

50/50 Finishers

We would like to recognize our SCR Club Members (past or present) who have completed a Full or Half Marathon in all 50 States!

Full Story from Gene:
I completed my goal of a Marathon in every state and DC in June 2012, the Washington state North Olympic Discovery Marathon.

Pam, my wife and I started walking/jogging to lose weight but a co-worker of hers challenged her to train and run the Catalina Marathon in 1997. After training for 6 mo we did our first marathon on 3/22/97, on our 22nd year anniversary. It was especially fun after the race, to watch the University of Arizona’s (our college alma maters) basketball team win a Final Four match on the way to the March Madness tournament win that year.

After doing 9 marathons in California between the first in 1997, we got the bug and started the adventure of traveling and running in other states. In 2003 we started the 50 State quest in Minnesota (Grandma’s Marathon). I joined the 50 state club and started doing 4-5 marathons in different states each year. My wife (Pam) ran in every state with me but chose to do Half-Marathons most of the time. Some of the races we chose due to scheduling only had full marathons and she completed them (3). She said she did halfs so she could finish first and get my picture at the finish line. It was great having her there at every finish line. My good friend/running club member (Don Seibert) would train with me mostly on the long training runs and did several out of state marathons with us.

In 2004 I did the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC, so I say I did 51 State marathons. In 2007 I completed the most state marathons in a year (7). Along the journey I did 5 SCV marathons, but mostly half marathons during the 15 year stretch (1997-2012)

I have completed 61 marathons, the last being in 2014, when I suffered an inflamed achilles. After a year of rehab and reinjury, I called it quits with Marathons.
