The Santa Clarita Runners are pleased to announce a running clinic with the nationally-known coach, Pat Connelly, currently the track and coach at Valencia High School. In addition, he travels around the country to speak and do clinics on running.-- Brian Frank
Pat has an amazing history. In addition to being an excellent runner, he was a career officer in the Los Angeles Police Department. He was instrumental in developing and working D.A.R.E. and other programs to steer at risk youth away from crime. Over 20 years, he coached San Fernando Valley area high school cross country teams to 16 City titles. He also was the long-time head coach of the Los Angeles Road Runners, and he prepared over 30,000 running rookies to complete the Los Angeles Marathon.
As of that wasn't enough, Pat was an assistant track coach at UCLA and head cross country coach at USC. He also published a book, Go The Distance.
Pat will conduct a clinic at the track at the College of the Canyons track on July 1st, 8th, 15th. The clinic sessions start at 6:15 p.m. and last 90 minutes. Runners of all ages and abilities are welcome, but space is limited. We suggest you email Pat Connelly (coachpat@sbcglobal.net) to express your interest and intent to participate. The cost for all three sessions is $30, and it is requested you make your check payable to the V.H.S. Cross Country Booster club. Or for each session, the cost is $10.

Hello SCR's,-- Brian Frank
Tuesday, June 10th marks our annual club Track Meet. It is a Race Series "fun" event worth 3 points. As always, it will be held at College of the Canyons. You can park in the main parking lot just off of Valencia Blvd. right in front of the football/track stadium. Please try to arrive around 6:15pm to check in and sign up for the race(s) you'll be participating in. The meet will begin at approximately 6:45pm. There will be many distances run, from 100 meters up to at least 1,600 meters. You can enter as many events as you want. Even though this is an informal club event, you will receive official times for all of the events you choose to run in. There is no cost to participate and no awards. Come on out to see if you can break some club age group records or just to have a good time with your fellow SCR's.
Look forward to seeing all of you out there!

Hello SCR's,-- Brian Frank
This Saturday, May 31st is the annual Towley Canyon Fun Run. This is a Race Series "fun" event worth 3 points. We will all gather in the dirt parking lot on the west side of The Old Road (west of I-5), just south of Calgrove Blvd. The run will start at approximately 7:30am. This is one of the most popular events on our calendar, usually attracting well over 50 runners. For those of you who haven't done this before, it is a 6 mile trail run, on a loop course. We run uphill for 3 miles, with a lot of switchbacks, and then back down. When you get up towards the top, you will be rewarded with awesome views of our valley below. For those who just can't get enough, there is an additional 2 mile loop you can do. Afterwards, we'll gather back in the parking lot for some well deserved refreshments and good conversation. I really encourage new members to come out, as this is a great way to meet a lot of your fellow club members and to experience one of our most enjoyable events of the year.
See you all at Towsley!

Dear SCR's,-- Brian Frank
Please read the e-mail below from longtime SCR Russ Sidles regarding this year's Relay For Life event. As many of you know, Russ and Chris Sidles captain a "team" every year at the Relay For Life called "Running For A Cure". Every year, many SCR's support this event with personal donations and/or participation in the event.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Relay For Life, it raises millions of dollars for The American Cancer Society with similar 24 hour events in hundreds of cities throughout the world. Our local event is a lot of fun for the entire family, with dozens of booths with crafts for sale and food available. The Opening Ceremony/Survivors Lap and the Lumineria Ceremony are very emotional events and are wonderful to share with kids. The Lumineria Ceremony is particularly powerful, as it happens at night (9pm) and consists of hundreds of people carrying lit white candles and marching around the "track" that is lined with thousands of white bags with candles lit inside, each bag dedicated to a loved one who has passed away from cancer, is fighting the battle or is a survivor. You can purchase Lumineria bags at the event and either have names of loved ones put on them by volunteers or have you and/or your kids personally color and decorate them with all of the crayons, markers and creative stamps provided at the event. I do this with my kids every year and it's quite meaningful for all of us to do this together.
I encourage you to come out and support this important event. Donations are appreciated, but not mandatory. If you do attend, please make sure to come by the "Running For A Cure" booth. The free Chi-Chi's pasta lunch is great and the midnight pizza party is awesome. You can call Russ and Chris at the number listed below or send them an e-mail at rsidles@sbcglobal.net. You can also call me or send me an e-mail, as I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
Thanks,
Brian

Dear SCR's,-- Brian Frank
Since I know we have a large number of members planning to (or hoping to) run in the 2009 Boston Marathon, I wanted to pass on this important information to you. Marathon Tours already has put out their Lodging Form on their website, which is www.marathontours.com. If you want to stay at a hotel near the finish line and pay a greatly reduced price, you should book your hotel through Marathon Tours. Even though this is almost a year from now, the best hotels will be sold out before long. Since you can always cancel hotel reservations, I highly recommend you complete the form and send it in with your fully refundable one night deposit immediately, even if you haven't yet qualified, but hope to. If you're not sure how many nights you're going to stay, simply overbook to the maximum nights you're considering, as you can always cancel individual nights later. FYI, I will be staying at the Marriott Copley from 4/16-4/21. I've stayed there for both of my previous Boston Marathons. It's a very nice hotel and is, in my opinion, the most centrally located to the expo, restaurants and the finish area (only .15 miles from the finish).
If you have any questions about this, please send me an e-mail or call me at (661) 312-1147.
