JUNE PRESIDENTS MESSAGEDuring an average week in Santa Clarita, you don't have to look too far to spot any number of runners pounding the pavement, and trails. It's testament to the place we live seeing so many enjoying the great running environment the city has to offer and of cause the climate we all enjoy year round.
I always look at the runners I see and wonder what goals they have set for themselves or races they are aiming to conquer. For many I have no doubt it's simply the thrill of feeling fitter and healthier, and pinning a number on is not even on their radar.
For those who have a race goal in mind perhaps the Santa Clarita Runners Club can offer help and support. We have many running groups who meet during the week and can provide no end of advice on how to achieve those personal goals. In addition to the organized groups, many of our members have created their own small sub-groups who regularly meet in preparation for an upcoming event or race.
Our most popular gathering is the Sunday morning marathon training group mentored by Rawlins Jordan. We have seen many success stories rise from the Sunday run. Rawlins has helped so many new runners realize they can cross the finish line of a big city marathon and of course our own Santa Clarita marathon in November.
On any Saturday morning a cross section of our runners meet at Lowe's. The 10 mile route provides an opportunity to test speed and endurance or simply meet up with a like-minded individual for a pleasant run, good gossip followed by a Starbucks coffee. Thursday evenings is our social run, taking in many of the local trails and paseos. Regardless of your ability, if you just looking for a leisurely run after work, this is the perfect opportunity. Tuesday evenings is our track meet at College of the Canyons. This is a vigorous workout structure for all levels of runners.
The most intimidating part of being a new or slower runner is watching the fast people peel away from you as soon as you have taken the first couple of steps. I remember that feeling well. The Santa Clarita Runners have created groups especially for new and experienced runners alike. One of them I'm sure is perfect for you and each one has no shortage of runners ready to give great advice. So, there's no excuse for not joining one of our groups each week. Before you know it you will have your own sub group with all those new friends you'll make.
Further details of all our organized runs and events can be found at www.scrunners.org.
See you out and about - Martin Lilly, President

Come join us at any of our scheduled gatherings, all of which are listed in our calendar.
- Our Saturday Morning Run is one of the club's traditional gathering place. The run begins at Starbuck's at 7:00 am in the Lowe's center on Bouquet Canyon Road and covers a marked course for distances up to 10 miles. A fast course, the looped out and back route offers ample opportunity to greet fellow runners as well as turn arounds for shorter distances. Preview the run with our online map.
- Is the marathon your reason for being? Then our Marathon Training group is the place for you, with carefully planned training distances and maps. Water and Gatorade are strategically located along the course. The group meets at Granary Square on McBean Parkway, Sundays at either 6:30 or 7:00 am.
- Feel the need for speed? Interval workouts are held Tuesday evenings at 6:15 pm on the College of the Canyons track in Valencia.
- Thursdays at 6:15 pm comprise our all-around social training runs, about 5-6 miles at an easy pace. As the daylight hours lengthen these runs gradually migrate to the beautiful trails surrounding Santa Clarita Valley. Check our calendar for current run locations.

HOW WE HELP THE COMMUNTITYWhat we do and how we can help!
The Santa Clarita Runners provides both personnel and expertise to race organizers and events throughout the surrounding community.
Our Race Management expertise provides your event with official management of race results. Our services will provide you and your event participants with race results that are fast and accurate.
We work closely with race organizers throughout the event. Our volunteers coordinate the vital aspects of your race with you; registration, start of the race, finish line and tabulation of race results. We furnish personnel, finish line equipment, and timing mechanisms. We design an effective finish line not only for the runners, but also for the spectators.
We also are a consultant resource, providing assistance to your event's Race Director. Our services have proven beneficial in successful running events throughout the surrounding running community for more than 20 years:Because of the spirited and generous people we bring into our club, there is a groundswell of support when we call for volunteers. We actively encourage volunteering to help community groups and charities with their running events. It is an opportunity for meeting new people, having fun, applying your skills, learning something new, involving your friends and family and achieving personal goals in life.
